The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
