Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
